Backflow Preventers

What Are Backflow Preventers?

When you use water, it comes from a clean source and then travels straight through waste piping to the sewer law or a sewage tank. It is prominent to prevent the waste water from advent into caress with the clean water, which can spread disease or toxic chemicals. To protect clean water sources, you should install backflow preventers at taps, valves, and other clean water sources.

First, it is imperative to identify the dangers of water contamination. If dirty toilet water or sink water spreads to clean water, it can carry with it diseases like salmonella, giardia, and typhoid fever. If pool overflow gets into a drinking water supply, it can spread high amounts of chlorine and other hazardous chemicals into the main supply. Thus, cases of water backflow can be fatal.

Next, how does backflow happen? Normally, high pressure in a water main or other supply line troops the liquid to continually move forward. This is what allows you to have strong water pressure so that it can flow out of faucets, shower heads, etc. If the pressure suddenly decreases, dirty water can flow into the supply line because it no longer is fighting against high pressure. Things like water main breaks, frozen pipes, and other problems can lead to a loss of water pressure and therefore, backflow.

Backflow preventers are special devices that stop dirty liquid from flowing into a clean water supply. To protect yourself and your loved ones, as well as other citizen who rely on the water supply, you should install backflow preventers where dirty liquid could possibly flow into the clean supply. There are some different types of preventers, including:

Air gaps
Double check valves
Reduced pressure detectors and valves
Vacuum breakers
Dual checks

One of the simplest types of backflow preventers are air gaps, which supply a break where dirty liquid cannot flow into a faucet. For instance, at a sink, the faucet mouth is above the level of the sink. If the sink fills, the water will overflow the sink rim and spill onto the ground. It cannot climb into the sink faucet unless the entire room is filled with water up to the level of the sink faucet.
